Original Context & Exegesis

A. Passage Boundaries (why are these verses grouped together in this chapter or pericope?)

B. Exegesis of passage as a whole (or verse-by-verse, if helpful).

5:1 The word translated "exhort" is parakaleo which I'm pretty sure is a form of parakletos which is the word translated "Comforter" speaking of the Holy Spirit. Interesting that he refers to himself as an apostle in chapter 1 verse 1 and as an elder here. He seemed in the earlier parts to be boldly challenging the people to live as they should. In this part he's gently speaking to elders and comforting and exhorting them in their tasks as leaders.

5: 2-4 The job of elders is to shepherd the flock entrusted to them. This they are to do willingly, eagerly (of a ready mind), and in such a way as to be good examples to those that are under them. They are not to serve grudgingly, for selfish gain, or as dictators. Those who discharge their duties in this fashion will be rewarded.

5:5 Perhaps God gives grace to the humble because they realize that they need it and ask. Perhaps all He has to do to resist the proud is to not help them -- "if they are so self-sufficient, let them get themselves out of this"
