Original Context & Exegesis

A. Passage Boundaries (why are these verses grouped together in this chapter or pericope?)

B. Exegesis of passage as a whole (or verse-by-verse, if helpful).

1:1 Morris' Literal Bible seems to put a slightly different meaning to this verse. It says "Simeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those equally precious with us having obtained faith in the righteousness of the God of us and Savior of us, Jesus Christ." The primary differences that I see are that it seems to define the recipients of the letter as "equally precious" to Peter instead of just their faith, and it links "God" and "Savior" to "Jesus Christ", not just "Savior". This verse, if Morris is right, clearly shows Jesus' deity if it indeed would be rightly translated in English "...our God and Savior, Jesus Christ" instead of "...our God and our Savior Jesus Christ" George Ricker Berry's Interlinear Greek New Testament seems to say the same things as Morris'.

1:2 The cause of the multiplication of grace and peace seems to be the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. This seems to establish a cause-effect relationship between the first and second parts of this verse. The logical conclusion of this is that if you desire grace and peace, work towards a more intimate knowledge of God.
